As a child 121 was my favourite number. It followed me into adulthood. I would favour it when I was selecting lockers at the gym, picking lucky numbers for lotteries, notice when it was presented to me, things like that. There was no real reason why I found myself drawn to this number, and I never questioned it. I just allowed it to be part of my collection of strange neuroses. When the new moon unveiled itself earlier this month I conducted a ritual to let go of things that do not serve me. During the full Scorpio moon this weekend I took the time to tie up loose end on things that were setting me back. I prepared a release ritual. It was a very meaningful moment. The last two years have been very transformational for me. As I set up the ritual and was about to begin this heavy release I checked the time. It was 1:21 pm. The relevancy of 121 in my life never made much sense to me, but after yesterday’s ritual I realised that it could be a way the universe communicates in synchronicity.
Synchronicity is the universe’s way of giving us a little nudge. It’s the way it tells us we are doing the right thing. We are not alone in this world. We are taken care of and we are safe. It often presents itself in moments where we act outside of logic or pragmatic reason and allow our intuition to impact our decisions. These moments can be euphoric or ecstatic. They are some of the most memorable moments in my life. Why? Well, if you have felt this before you understand, if not I will give you a couple of explainations.
Famous psychoanalytic theorist, Carl Jung believed synchronicity mirrors deep psychological process. He was one of the first to really dive in, present and analyse the issue in modern times. Dreams, symbols, names, songs, colours and the like all take on meaning and provide us guidance that correspond to our subconscious. He spoke of it as a principle that governs all of us and is part of a universal law. It described a governing dynamic which underlies the whole of human experience and history — social, emotional, psychological, and spiritual. It is used to explain various occurrences in mathematics, probability theory, religion and quantum physics.
For example, you may be trying to figure out where to go for vacation, and someone bumps into you on the street wearing an I Love NYC t-shirt. Or maybe you’re struggling to focus in life or cannot see something that may give you guidance or happiness, and while taking a walk you slip and shatter your glasses.
These may seem like meaningless coincidences, but the more you allow yourself to listen to them, the stronger they become and the more often they present themselves. For the last month I have been dreaming of a very distinct turquoise and wood paneled pick up truck. I couldn’t figure out why for the life of me. While sitting outside today I came to a realization of some things I need to let go of in order to find more peace and happiness. And just like that, the exact car, wood paneling and all, drove right by me. And of course moments after a baby feather fell on my nose. Synchronicity is as if the universe is winking at us. We feel not so alienated and alone at these moments, but instead we feel seen and felt and cared for by a force grander than our individual egos.
When we allow ourselves to be guided by spirit, the universe, god, whatever higher power we chose to believe in, we put our faith in knowledge that is greater than our worldly understanding. Sometimes we don’t understand why things are difficult. Sometimes we don’t understand why things are seemingly unfair or complicated. Sometimes we cannot find the clarity we need in situations. When we listen to our intuition, even though the exact answers we are looking for do not reveal themselves, we can receive messages of assurance. Everything is going to be ok. You are still on the right path. Things may be confusing now, but have faith – we’re working on it.
The biggest question I get from my clients is “when” something they desire will happen, or “what exactly is it.” To be fair, I also find myself wanting those answers. We are human. We live in a world bound by time and filled with labels. To that though, the only advice I can give both to myself and to those in these seemingly hopeless situations is that faith will lead the way. The more we lament over outcomes that we have conceived, the less faith we have in the universe to create the best possible outcome for us. We don’t always know what that is because we don’t have the same perspective. We are confined to some degree, even us more ‘connected’ individuals, by our human existence.
In all spiritual work we have to understand that there is an element of submission we need to experience. We set intentions, we set goals and desires in our lives. We tell the universe, yes, I am ready to receive love, success, wealth and the like. All actions have magickal reactions. Everything you do, say, think or feel reverberates. It is all energy that you send outwards and manifests into the world. The more we worry about the future or lament over the past, the more doubt we place in spirit and our guides. The more doubt we have in spirit, the less likely things will work in our favour. However, if we let go and say, I will do my part and focus on what is important now, the universe will perfect our outcomes.
Existing behind the veil of humanity skews our perspective. We may believe an outcome must unfold a specific way in order to ensure our happiness, but that’s not exactly accurate. Sometimes, actually in most cases, the universe have a very cheeky way of perfecting our desires. It has a very beautiful way of manifesting exactly what we need to ensure our happiness – we just need to allow space for that to grow.
We also forget that we are not alone in this world. Yes our desires are important, but we are not the only creatures on this planet, let alone in this universe. Things take time, and everything is connected. As time goes on sometimes our patience wears thin, sometimes we lose and sometimes we are hurt. But the hardest lesson is knowing when to let go. We are not to allow ourselves to suffer until we find happiness. Let me clear, that is not the answer. What we must allow ourselves to do is focus on how we can be happy in our present moment. Continually applying this focus will ensure our continued and everlasting happiness. Perhaps that’s a topic for a later discussion. But what I will leave you with is this beautiful affirmation and reminder:
No longer do we need to force things. Set the intention and let the seed grow. What flows, flows. What crashes, crashes. We only have space and energy for things that serve us. Keeping this in mind can help us focus on the present moment and allow the right nutrients for our seeds in so they may grow.
